• Revel Reveals New Ways to Support Student Learning in the Digital Age

    by Pearson

    The problem

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College (PHCC) enrolls about 2,400 students each year, evenly split between traditional college students and high school students participating in a dual enrollment program.

Daniella Cope, a psychology professor and program coordinator at PHCC, saw that her students were struggling. They needed help accessing essential course materials on time, sometimes due to financial difficulties, causing them to fall behind and lose momentum with their learning. PHCC, due to its smaller size, couldn’t provide tutoring support for the students who fell behind, which compounded the problem.

Daniella and her colleagues needed a learning resource that would give students instant access to their course materials and the reinforcements they needed to take charge of their learning experiences.

    The solution

Daniella knew where to go to find the solution to her problem. When she learned that Revel materials they needed on day one via an Inclusive Access program, she was convinced to make the switch from MyLab Psychology to Revel.

  • Pearson+ is a cost-effective option that contributes to learner success

    by Pearson

A man looking into a book, taking notes, with head phones on.

Pearson+ is a cost-effective option with various eTexts that contribute to learner success

In fall 2021, Pearson partnered with learners from institutions across the United States to learn more about their experience with Pearson+ and eTexts.

Through this work, learners share that Pearson+ is offering a convenient, flexible, and cost-effective option for accessing Pearson eTexts which include a variety of features that support learning.

Read the complete findings here  or continue reading to learn more about what learners have to say.

A plan to fit your budget

After researching several options for eText rental, Alejandra Kacapyr, junior at Fayetteville State University, found that Pearson+ was the right fit for her. On top of it being the most budget friendly; she appreciated the monthly subscription model.

“(Pearson+) was the best option. I was able to rent monthly, and it was also the lowest price… I love that I can get it as an eText and it just makes it a lot easier. It cuts away shipping, so I don’t have to wait for the book to get here, especially when renting it.”

Tools and features that aid in comprehension

The interactivity of the eTexts increases comprehension for Lauryn Morton, junior at Baylor College. Instead of simply reading, being able to engage with features gives her another way of learning concepts that resonates with her studying style.

“Another feature I have really been enjoying is that a lot of the eTexts will have very interactive features like graphs and diagrams that help break down concepts that can be a little more confusing to understand when it’s written down. Once you put it in a diagram it clicks more, so I have really been enjoying that.”

    Facilitating a positive learning experience

The layout of the text encourages Emma Uren, senior at Northern Michigan University, to study as she finds it’s not as intimidating as reading a traditional physical textbook. She explains, “I do think the text is broken down very well. The chapter is broken down into sections and then each section is broken down into topics. I find that very motivating because it’s not at all overwhelming.”

    Convenient and easy to use

According to Emma, when comparing the Pearson+ subscription model to others, Pearson+ makes accessing multiple text selections simple. “I have never had a challenge finding my textbook. Sometimes there are issues with other platforms, like Cengage, where it would just store all your textbooks, even those I only searched for, in alphabetical order. Pearson+ is easier because as soon as I log in my textbook is right there, I hit read and am back to where I left off.”

    Superior way of supporting learning

Throughout one’s higher ed career, learners are often exposed to a variety of publishers and course materials. One of those options often used are OER resources. Sean Rosenberg, graduate student at West Chester University, sees the benefit of Pearson’s eTexts over OER, especially when it comes to readability.

“(OER) are free for a reason…what I like about Pearson texts is there’s not too much information. They are not super dense, they are pretty easy to read through, and straight forward. Whereas sometimes you get these academic articles, and you can read the three pages seven times and still not know what they’re talking about.”

    Highly recommended

100% of learners stated they would recommend Pearson+ to other learners in similar situations, and often wished they knew about it sooner. Reasons range from cost-effectiveness to convenience to user friendliness. Some learners explained how they have already been recommending it because they have been pleased with their experience and want other learners to experience the benefits as well.

How MyLab IT contributes to student success and best practices implementation

In Fall 2018, Professor Amy Rutledge at Oakland University in Rochester, MI partnered with Pearson to investigate how MyLab™ IT with Exploring Office 2016 Volume 1 and Exploring Office 2016 Excel Comprehensive impacted student success in her Business Problem Solving with Information Technology course.

    • Students who scored above average on MyLab IT homework earned average exam scores 11 percentage points higher than students who scored below average on homework.
    • The professor developed many best practice assignments including a syllabus quiz, a midterm journal reflection assignment, and a “how-to” Grader Project assignment.

Click here to read the full case study or continue reading to learn more.

Why does Professor Amy Rutledge utilize MyLab IT?

Students enter the course with a range of skill levels and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. In working through assigned simulations and homework in MyLab IT, students can customize their learning experience and build on their knowledge by utilizing multiple attempts, available learning aids, and detailed score reports.

    How was MyLab IT implemented?

Class meets in a computer lab twice a week for 75 minutes each session. As a recommended best practice, at the beginning of the semester, Rutledge assigns a syllabus quiz she created in MyLab IT.

She has students work on MyLab Simulation Trainings after the in-class activity as homework. Students have an unlimited number of attempts to earn their best score. Grader Project assignments are designed to test what students have learned in the MyLab IT Simulation Trainings and reading assignments. In the face-to-face sections, MyLab IT accounts for 45% of the total course grade and in the online sections, MyLab IT accounts for 55% of the total course grade.

Were students successful in the course?

Students were divided into two groups — those scoring above and those scoring below the average MyLab Simulation Training score of 95.6%.

    • Students who scored above average on MyLab Simulation Trainings earned an average Grader Project score 18 percentage points higher than students who scored below average on Simulation Trainings.

Students were divided into two groups based on their average MyLab homework score of 85%, identifying the following:

    • Students who scored above average on MyLab IT homework earned average exam scores 11 percentage points higher than students who scored below average on homework.

    MyLab IT best practices

Setting students up for success with a “How-to” Grader Project assignment

    • After completing the first Grader Project, students must go to “View Submissions” to see their Grader Project Report and the details of any incorrect steps they made. Students must take a screenshot of this report, as well as download their submitted file and Live Comments report.

Addressing student complaints regarding MyLab scoring

    • She asks students to email her the original submitted file, a screenshot of the summary report, the version of Office in use, and whether the student is using Windows or Mac with steps marked as incorrect on summary report they believe should be correct.

    Assigning mid-semester journal reflection

    • Students are asked to include their mid-semester score and GPA and then think about their performance in the course so far — whether it meets their expectations, and if it does not, what their plan is to improve their performance. Rutledge also has students provide any feedback or questions they have in general about the course and asks students what they think is working well with the course or what they think needs to be improved.

Did students like using MyLab IT?

When asked what the benefits of MyLab IT were, two students responded:

You get direct examples and lots of practice.”

Helps you really understand what is going on in the class and is a good warm up for the assignments while it's fresh in your brain.
